2011 & Beyond

As of 2010 the Movember Foundation created "networks". These are collections of teams, and in our case, we (Nico and Don) started the City of Remo network to keep the local teams in contact and working towards a common goal.

2010 was a huge success despite our efforts. We had a community goal of $25,000 and by the end we'd raised over $30,000 - an incredible accomplishment. Turns out, that this kind of thing is a huge undertaking and trying to coordinate events at the network level doesn't work. Sure we started City of Remo but we're just guys. We don't work for the foundation and we put our lives on hold for two months (or more) every year to run our little part of this global effort.

In the beginning City of Remo was an excuse to grow moustaches with our friends. (Mission accomplished!) Over the years it grew and we were excited to see a portion of the city come together. But along the way it changed ... it became about us in some way and that isn't what Movember should be. Movember is men taking charge of their own health. Too many men wait around until something is seriously wrong before they go see a doctor. We see the local Movember community in the same light - don't wait around for someone to do something - get out there and do it!

That said, we realize the City of Remo name has some value and we're happy to list events and blog posts on this site. If you've started a team and you want to take advantage of that just contact us (see the bottom of this page.) Want to take over? We can talk about that too. Have fun growing thos mos!

Ready for 2011!

Our ReMO network is setup for the year. Teams from Reno should join up so that we can get a better idea of how many MOs are helping the cause.

The network is here: http://us.movember.com/mospace/network/Remo

Don't Shave Yet! Two days until the 3rd Annual Mo Ball!

Today is the last day of Movember and we have done an amazing thing, as of right now the City of Remo network has raised $25,082! How great is that? I'll tell you - that is more than double what we raised in total last year. Thank you to everyone that helped throughout the month.

We have one last task in front of us: The 3rd Annual City of Remo Mo Ball

Spread Peace Cafe has been promoting Movember all month long and they are going to cap it off by hosting our end-of-the-month party!

WHAT
We consider this to be a special occasion - a celebration - so dress up. It is a formal/semi-formal event. We want to see nice shirts, ties, suits, dresses, etc. Think of it as the early Christmas party for your team and the City of Remo Network.

Of course, we will be announcing winners in various categories, best mo, worst mo, man of movember, miss movember, and more. We will also be going over the team and individual standings.

This is more cocktail party than dinner party so, NO COVER, plus food/drink discounts. There will be a full menu so feel free to come in a touch early and eat, or eat during the festivities. Whatever! We just want you to have fun and meet one another.

The Mo Ball is a FAMILY FRIENDLY event, no need to get a baby sitter. Your loved ones put up with that stache for 30 days or more, bring them with you and let them celebrate with us.

WHEN
The party starts Dec. 2nd at 7PM and will go for a couple of hours.

WHERE
Spread Peace Cafe
50 N. Sierra Street · Ste. 106
Reno, NV

WHO
YOU! This is one event where you can't think "someone else will go". There is no one else, only you. Get up, get dressed, and get out. We want to meet you. We want to see your smiling faces as we bask in the glow of a job well done.
Bring the team! Seriously, your goal should be to get as many of your teammates to this event. The point is to celebrate what we have all been through and the good work we have done. How can we do that with a handful of people?

Bring the family! As I mentioned before, Spread Peace is very kid friendly. No over 21 here.

Bring friends and coworkers. Did you have someone that was asking about this all month long? Were they more and more interested as the days went by? Get them to come out and see the other folks in town that did this with you.

This is it. The last event, let's make it special.

Sushi Pier and Movember

Sushi Piero, one of Reno's favorite sushi restaurants, has joined the Movember campaign. Those guys are well motivated!

Most of their staff is growing a Mo, and they also have added two specials to their menus. Everytime anyone orders one of these, a donation will be made to Movember.

One of their specials is aptly named the Fu Manchu, in honor of the fictional character with the very unique moustache. The sushi roll represents it quite fairly, and it's made of ebi, crystal shrimp, avocado and cream cheese:

The other special is a little bit more daring. One could even say, and quite accurately, that it's pretty ballsy. Behold, the Pier Balls, made out of salmon, yellowtail, queso fresco and panko:

They are both delicious, but don't take our word for it! Get to Sushi Pier and try some delicious treats while supporting Movember at the same time. All 3 locations for Sushi Pier (two in Reno and one in South Lake Tahoe) have the specials running for the whole month.

Movember kick-off (Shave-Off!) recap

What a fun night!

The Reno Collective let us use some of their space, and by 7pm we were ready to roll with the famous Moustache Ride from Eclipse Pizza, and some beer and wine donated by Amendment 21.

After a quick ceremonial speech, a couple of chairs were set up so that the barbers from Old West Barber Shop could get to work. They had clippers to get unruly facial hair down to a short length, and then they even offered full shaves to get everyone clean-shaven and fully compliant with the Movember competition rules. By the way, they did this for free and one of the barbers even shaved his goatee to join in the Mo-action. You should check them out if you're looking for a good shave, they excellent old-fashioned shaves at their shop that will leave you feeling like a true gentleman (and if you tell them that you're doing Movember, you'll get a little something special!).

(download)

We had over 20 gentlemen who needed shaving, and we saved the best for last: David Calvert had a beard... and he shaved it all off! It took a lot of time, but it was well worth it. There's a video of that in the works, we'll certainly share for you to see how it's done.

Finally, a Movember mospace URL you can remember!

Mospace

Are you tired of trying to remember your mospace url? We are too. http://us.movember.com/mospace/SOMERANDOMNUMBER is just too much!

That's why we created MoRLs (MO URLs). These MoRLs are links off of the City of Remo website that redirect right to your mospace.

my mospace is http://us.movember.com/mospace/12368

But with the miracle of MoRLs I can use http://cityofremo.com/don

What are you waiting for? Go claim yours now!

1. Head over to http://cityofremo.com/morls/claim

Claim-morl

2. Follow the instructions and get up to 3 MoRLs for your mospace. For example, you might want your first name, your twitter handle and if you're a team captain, you might want one for your team. (Remember, the team captain's mospace is used as the main team page.)

3. Enjoy your shiny new toy. Go ahead, you've earned it.
